New Contemporary Sustainable Home

Modern self-build that realised the client’s dream.

Location: Warborough

Mike and Shirley wanted a modern, striking, sustainable build on the edge of a conservation area. We worked with them to create a design that was truly unique and in line with their dream for their new home.

The contemporary design that was arrived at focussed on the large curved glass façade which blurs the boundaries between outside and inside spaces. We worked with Mike and Shirley closely to decide upon what materials and sustainable aspects we would settle on. The stone and cedar adds an individual element to the contemporary design, and the use of sedum roofs, rainwater harvesting and air source heat pumps makes this build much more eco-friendly and self-reliant for its utility supplies.

Using stone and cedar the building enhances its setting and provides an array of spaces that relate to the external views and the family’s way of living. The design utilises the drop in level across the site creating different heights and volumes within.

From the beginning Mike and Shirley were involved in creating their home, working with expert architects to realize their dreams and build a property they can be proud of.

Mike and Shirley’s testimony

“Opinder’s continued involvement and interest in our house not only shows great client care but also that he is as proud of our home as we are.

Having never done this before the level of service we received from Opinder was excellent and he really held our hand throughout the whole project; sorting out any issues / queries promptly keeping the project on track. Concerns of ours were professionally dealt with keeping us reassured; for example we wondered how well renewable technologies could handle the heating of such large spaces. This has proved to be very consistent (24 degrees) all year round through even with the extremes of temperature we have had recently from  -4 to +32 degrees C. These technologies are all working seamlessly very well to our benefit and we’re glad we adopted them into the project.

It has been refreshing to know that our achievements are being shared with others and we welcome other potential self-builders to come and talk to us in our home and see the excellent results that can be produced when you have a great architect who knows about self-building.

Looking at the project as a whole we would say it has been good value for money.

Opinder kept us updated on almost a daily basis and enabled us to make changes to the design even when on site. All in all it was an interesting and more importantly an enjoyable experience and we are glad Opinder was our architect and has built a house we are immensely proud off.”
