Magical luxury arts and craft new build surrounded by secret garden and woodland

Location: Cumnor Hill

The brief from Michael was to create a special, luxury home within ancient woodland. We worked with Michael to unlock potential in his plot: we focussed the views down to the garden and angled the main link of the house so that it looked straight towards Farmoor reservoir in the distance. We worked with him over several design meetings, making sure we gave him the time to get his design exactly how he wanted it to be. It was a very interactive process.

The property is based on a T shape in plan form. It focusses its views both down the landscaped garden and over to Farmoor, away from neighbouring properties creating privacy. Careful detailing in the arts and crafts style with decorative oak framing adds character and internal interest.

Natural daylight is maximised with lots of glazing to the rear in particular and with generous floor to ceiling heights, and elements of double volume spaces there is a real feeling of luxury and spaciousness.

This project was shortlisted for four 2018 Build It Awards including the Best Self-Build Architect category.

Client testimony

“I wanted to somehow capture the nostalgic folk-lore quality that this plot, and its story, held for me in the design of my new home. I also wanted a home that would work around my life and the way I knew I would interact with the building. Right from the beginning lapd Architects took the time to understand what I was excited about and channelled that excitement towards a design which was firmly rooted in our collaborative vision for the property. They took these key design points and translated them into something so much more than I thought possible.

Nikki, from the very first meeting I had with her, really listened to me and got to the heart of my vision. She latched on to the magic potential I saw in the plot, and understood straight away that I didn’t just want a house that was purely functional. I wanted to be part of a project that would remain a faithful testament to the way I saw this plot of land for years to come. I felt in control of my dream build throughout the whole process because of the way they kept me informed and communicated with me concisely and regularly. I know I wouldn’t have ended up with this amazing building which now stands on this plot without lapd.”
