New contemporary home with accessible features to suit retired couple’s needs

Alison and James wanted to replace the bungalow that existed on this site. The site is positioned in a residential area of Cholsey, neighboured by surrounding cottages and a grade 2 listed bakehouse. Alison and James wanted to solve the problems of the existing structure on the plot of land through two major guiding design principles: a manageable, energy efficient, build accompanied with a sensitive attention to the feel and style of the immediate area. lapd worked closely with the clients to create a property that matched these specific needs.

We spent time with them discussing the multitude of options they had, and condensing down the design process into key decisions that were manageable. We worked with all of these factors to produce a design together that Alison and James could live in for years to come.

The result is a modern design that floods Alison and James’s living spaces with natural light and makes use of the large garden.

This project was shortlisted for the 2017 Build It Awards Best Self-Build Architect category.
