The owners of this semi-detached property found themselves with a common problem: they owned a property in wonderful surroundings, but wanted to incorporate an open plan family lifestyle and improve the kerb appeal of the building. Gaining planning approval for their ambitious two-storey extension, with a basement and garage link, required lapd’s planning expertise.

Previously, the client had tried to develop plans with another designer, but they did not fit with their lifestyle or design ambition. Soon after, lapd Architects stepped in to the picture. As professional designers they were able to accommodate the multiple factors in play: the family’s particular design requirements, the budget of the build and the strict planning guidelines in the area. After several meetings, taking the time to listen to the client’s concerns and ideas, and an extended correspondence with the planning officers, a new application was granted.

The new design allows for the large double height space downstairs that the homeowners wanted, with modern aluminium bifold doors providing a multi-functional and well-lit kitchen/diner and living room. The spacious first floor en-suite bedrooms boast vaulted ceilings and command a view of the surrounding landscape through their large windows. The glazed screen is a feature in its own right, counterpointed by the contemporary render and brick detailing.
